FUTURE PM 2.5 STANDARDS
H-GAC’s Transportation Policy Council (TPC) recently granted the
Clinton Drive project “High Priority” on the list of projects to receive
funds from American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Underun
funding. The project will be an addition to local strategies used in
suppressing fine particle matters of 2.5 microns (PM 2.5).
Due to the success of the local efforts, the area is on target to meet the
current standards for PM 2.5. However, it is anticipated that the
PM 2.5 standards will be strengthened in 2010. A Clinton Drive Task
Force consisting of several entities has studied the issue, and created a
project that should provide the additional PM 2.5 suppressing
techniques needed to remain in compliance.

On October 28, 2009 AMPO staff presented Alan Clark, Director of Transportation and Air Quality, with the National Award for outstanding Collaboration in Metropolitan Planning for the Agency’s NuRide and safety programs. In June 2005, the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) contracted with NuRide, Inc. to begin an online rideshare program in the Houston-Galveston eight county non-attainment area as a demonstration program. Commuters can use NuRide to find rideshare partners in their area, plan trips online, and earn points for each shared ride that may be redeemed for sponsor rewards. Currently, H-GAC’s NuRide program is one of the largest and most successful virtual rideshare programs in the nation. (Article Continued)
